Question about Rune words in Diablo 2.?

So my boyfriend told me you have to have the same amount of sockets as the number of Runes you are using in a rune word recipe, is this true? Like for Ral+Ort+Tal, do I have to have exactly 3 sockets in an item? Thanks.
